I am obsessed with the fact that in such a male oriented movie series in such a male oriented genre as action films that Ethan Hunt is just. Genuinely A Good Man. And that it's that and the fact that he cares about the people he loves SO much that are his biggest character flaw. Like God it's refreshing! He could easily be the Big Macho Male Action Hero Who Doesn't Care About Feelings but he feels so, so deeply. He botches a mission that almost causes a nuclear apocalypse because he wasn't able to let his friend die. It's just. So good.

(And it's also his biggest strength. And I love that so much. That they make it clear that it isn't a flaw, really. It's what makes him strong. The narrative reaffirming that is really, really important to me, too.)

Y'all practical effects bitches are really sleeping on the Mission: Impossible movies.

"Oh everything is CGI these days!" Mission: Impossible uses practical effects whenever it's safe to do so, and their definition of safe is incredibly skewed because Tom Cruise is, frankly, batshit insane.

The man refuses to use stunt doubles because he insists the audience can tell when it's not him. He's apparently one of the best stunt drivers in the world. He drove up a cliff and skidded to a stop right on the edge for real in Dead Reckoning. He got a fucking helicopter license and spent like three years training for the climactic scene in Fallout.

Most of the helicopter chase in Fallout was real. The midair oxygen-tank swap in that movie was also real. They practiced for it in a wind tunnel and then did the real thing in freefall.

When Tom Cruise dies, it's either going to be because he realized Scientology was a crock and tried to get out and they fucking killed him (highly unlikely that he'll ever come to that realization), or because his luck finally ran out while filming a stunt for a Mission: Impossible movie (significantly more likely).

Seriously, if you have the blu-rays of any of these movies, I strongly encourage you to watch them with the director's commentaries. Especially the ones directed by Christopher McQuarrie. That man has an almost pathological distaste for CGI (and when they do have to use it, he's incredibly respectful and complimentary of the people who do the special effects).

Do yourself a favor and watch these movies. They're not just kitschy action flicks. They're kitschy action flicks with a metric fuckton of practical effects, and a production team that really cares about the stories they're crafting.

Preface: For the last day of mental health month, I wanted to share something I wrote that deals with some rather dark struggles. Struggles that I know others face as well. Struggles that I hope might be eased for just one person who reads this, even if only in the smallest way.

Perhaps they ought not to have eaten the dragon. There had been people objecting to it at the time. Surely such meat was poisonous. Perhaps it was even an affront, an insult to some intangible order of nature they ought to honour.

But the city was starving, the siege had gone on too long, and the king's troops were still a week's march away. The scorched earth would be fertile again in time, but right now it was barren. Right now there were mouths to feed. So they changed their crossbows for butcher knives and got to work.

None of the royal commanders asked any questions that could not be answered. After all, their aid had come shamefully late. The dragon's horned skull made a noble gift, a fitting tribute from a triumphant city to its humbled king. Who would have thought to question them?

And none of the townsfolk spoke up, when the first golden-eyed babes were born. Children who grew up barefoot and fearless, clambering over the city's patched and rebuilt roofs like they had no notion of falling, with a strange glitter to their skin when the sunlight hit it just so. No one breathed a word about dragons.

Because soon enough there were deft, young hands taking loaves straight out of the oven, heedlessly lifting iron from the forge, plunging into boiling laundry water. And some of them more wondrous still, wild, warm-skinned youths, with inexplicable knowledge and peculiar remedies.

A blessing, their families said proudly. A blessing after so much hardship. Which it was, in its way. This city would never fear dragon fire again.

I’ve gotten a lot of new followers latey bc of Orm in the new Aquaman movie so here’s some fun (or not so fun) facts about Orm in the comics:

He loves rain on the surface, he thinks it’s one of the best things about the surface

His father Orvax was heavily abusive to both him and Atlanna

He had to learn to defend himself when he was eight years old

On Orm’s 12th bday, Orvax was killed by Atlanna (no one suspected this)

A few days after this, Atlanna threw a celebration for Orm’s bday and she faked her death to get out of Atlantis leaving Orm behind to rule Atlantis (he didn’t know she faked her death)

Orm became king of Atlantis when he was 12 years old, and he was a decent king

When he found out he had a brother living on the surface he cried because he was told horror stories about the surface growing up

When he was young, he wanted to go to the surface to rescue Arthur and that’s partly why he took up the throne in the first place

Orm seems to enjoy theatre, history, and stories

His helmet in the comics controls the sea and his trident controls the weather
