I Was Asked By A Friend Yesterday If I Could Offer Basic Tips About Comic Paneling. As It Turns Out,

I was asked by a friend yesterday if I could offer basic tips about comic paneling. As it turns out, I have a lot to say on the matter! I tried breaking down the art of paneling using the principles of art and design, and I hope it helps you out!

EDIT: uh uh there are a lot of people reblogging this, so i figure i may as well append this now while i can lol

This whole thing was very much cranked out in a few hours so I had a visual to talk about with a friend! If this gives you a base understanding of paneling, that's awesome! Continue to pull in studies from the comics you see and what other artists do well and don't do well! You can tell paneling is doing well when the action is flowing around in its intended reading format.

Here's the link to the globalcomix article from which I pulled the images about panel staggering! Someone sent in a reblog that it wasn't totally clear that the 7th slide mostly covers what NOT to do in regards to staggering, and that is my mistake!

I saw in a tag that someone was surprised I used MamaYuyu too, and I don't blame them lol. If I had given myself more than a couple hours maybe I would have added something else on, I just really admire MamaYuyu's paneling personally.

uh uh, final append: I am by no means a renowned master of paneling, so if you find anything off base here, by all means, counter it with your own knowledge and ways you can build upon from here! Art is always a sum knowledge of everything we find. šŸ’Ŗ

I need some writing advice, but first a more pics of barn owls

I Need Some Writing Advice, But First A More Pics Of Barn Owls

yay very pretty

ok so, writing advice pluz ->

I am writing a comic, and is actually particularly a fanatic for one of my fav fandoms rn.

But the story is has some really dark elements to it, and I'm worried that it is too dark to enjoy?

All the worst parts are technically resolved by the end, and yes the issues are addressed for how bleek they are, but it still bothers me that they are happening in the first place?

Like, even if I am treating the topic with respect, it is still really disturbing to describe/articulate, even if it technically plausible in the events of the story.

(Mind you, this comic leans more into the historical fiction category, where I am striving for accuracy)

----------------------

I am wanting to give more details here but I'm worried it might be triggering/not appropriate to post on here?

(I'm new so idk how we go about sensitive topics on bos platform)

----------------

In summary:

My goal as a writer is to tell and interesting story with high stakes, but I can't seem to do that without taking a dark toll, and I just don't have a good idea of "what too dark"?

For reference:

The comic is in relation to lackadaisy, where there are already mentions of

-war/wartime (ww1)

-possible hints of infidelity (Elsa and Victor)

-homosexualoty is a thing ( Serafine Savoy bi, zib bi, Mordecai ace)

-and general g/ng crime and m/rd/r

*although treated with the funny at times. I love Tracy Butler's writing

But my comic, on the other hand:

-systemic k/ll/ng, (as in, and organization has an established system that m/rd/rs a conserderbale amount of ppl)

*honestly terrifying to me, since stuff like this is happening in modern times too

- pr/st/tution (in the past, not actively happing/was traumatizing for the character/not glorified)

- and mentions of r/p/ (again, happened once in the past, and the character is deeply affected by it. There is no imagery of it actively happening, and the perpetrator is not viewed sympathically in any way)

-there us also a good handful of characters who have a disability (that presents physically) and I am doing a lot of research to portray them both accurately to the time (1920-1930's) and showing respectful/accurate attitudes that these characters might have about themselves in relation to their disability.

*research being both blogs/writing done my people with disabilities or by talking to my friends who share those same disabilities

================================

Anyway, I hope this kinda made sence. If you are willing to read all that and comment I will try to respond/get back to u as soon as possible

Thank you in advance for any advice!!
