A Long-ish Rant About Deities In D&D

A long-ish rant about deities in D&D

One thing that always bothered me about the various deities in D&D that there is almost no myth attached to them. The deities of D&D are a bit too understandable and logical. They’re just high level characters who also picked up the ability to grant divine spells because reasons I guess, with motivations and interests in the real world, but no myth attached to them.

Which is kinda boring, because myth is so important in religion. When you read about the shit that Mystra or Kelemvor or Cyric did during the Time of Troubles, it’s just that, shit they did, with 100% real and observable consequences, mostly in the way of eating other deities’ portfolios or shifting around the seating order in the pantheon or something, but no mythic resonance to it.

I always liked the sort of idea that deities exist on a level that is not entirely literal and heavily couched in metaphor, and that events in the real world are reflections of what happens on the divine level and vice versa.

Like, on the material plane some people just slowly adopted an agrarian way of life replacing their previous hunter-gatherer lifestyle giving rise to the establishment of the very first cities, which also lead to a shift in religious practice away from the gods of nature and towards gods that had more relevance to life within a city, but on the divine plane it was a full-on war with the gods of nature and the new-fangled city gods duking it out, and both of these are true.

Maybe on the material plane there never was a time when death didn’t exist and people were immortal so the gods had to kill the deity of life to stop more immortal people being born as a consequence of which death was first introduced into the world, but like, that literally happened in the divine realm! Or, like, literally in a metaphorical sense, because as I said the divine realm is all about metaphor.

And like maybe you rarely see the sun and the moon in the sky at the same time because the goddess of the moon is awfully shy and the goddess of the sun is constantly trying to find her because THEY SHOULD BE GIRLFRIENDS

saturday D&D tip: write all your lore from the woefully confusing world of Academia™. The whole argument depends on a tenuous citation of a guy who wrote about an event 100 years after it happened. The biography of the lich was written by one of his greatest enemies and so we have to treat it as a questionable source despite being the only primary source we have. The translation out of Old Draconic might be “sword,” or maybe it was “thorn,” but then the Draconic for ‘thorn’ was also often used as a euphemism for ‘usurper,’ etc. the academic text they were relying on is actually a fringe theory that may or may not have any basis in fact.

drew some kids today at the stream!  as usual, I am apparently only interested in STRONG ORANGE LIGHTING.  also, I didn’t realize it until halfway through, but I definitely borrowed the color scheme for Ashivon’s from some of @monoflaxart’s gorgeous fanart!! >O>

Hello! You've mentioned some religious clashes between moths and wasps. What is the core of the problem?

Hello! You've Mentioned Some Religious Clashes Between Moths And Wasps. What Is The Core Of The Problem?

The wasps worship the Sun and moths worship the Moon. This is a pretty straightforward and elegant way to justify their hatred of each other. The core of the problem is actually purely geopolitical. Their territories are neighbouring and right around the border are major trading routes, fertile lands and access to the sea. Naturally, desire to have control over these lands sparked many conflicts over the centuries. The border there almost never stays in the same position for more than twenty years.

Bonus pic: a Moon priest and a Sun priestess trying to act civil with each other but failing miserably.

in this house we believe:

this place is not a place of honor

no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here

nothing valued is here

what is here is dangerous and repulsive to us

the danger is in a particular location

the danger is still present in your time as it was in ours

C2, F1, G1, G2, J1, Z1

C2: In what position do they sleep?

Mint likes to curl up around things, including pillows, blankets, small animals, and other helltroopers. God help the soul who they fall asleep next to, before you know it you’ll have a monk clinging to you like glue.

F1: What do they do for fun?

Dumb Shit. Mint is (usually) fully aware when an idea is a bad one, but they think a little excitement is highly needed in everyone’s life. When not trying to wrangle snakes and telling white lies, they enjoy spending time with their fellow helltroopers, catching drinks at the tavern and telling outrageous stories around the fire.

(Also really likes to garden)

G1: What is their most attractive external feature?

Hmm probably their eyes or their smile! Their eyes are a real nice brown and are constantly twinkling with mirth, whereas when they smile a genuine, non-smirky smile, it lights up their whole face.

G2: What is the most attractive part of their personality?

When Mint decides they care about you, they really care about you. They don’t express this with words, but instead by being able to pick up on when you’re down, and trying to cheer you up. This can be in the form of random gifts, a nice act, or actually listening to what you say (i.e Paisley).

J1: What makes them happy?

Others believing the ridiculous shit they spout, seeing their friends having fun, The Chain being victorious, seeing something they planted grow big, rain. Stuff like that.

Z1: What is their favourite animal?

Mice or snails! Mint likes how sneaky + cute mice are, and thinks snails are ~effervescent~ (no but seriously, they really like snails. When they find one on a journey, will often pick one up and let it crawl around their hand and coo at it)
