James didn't die. He lived with Harry and when it was time for him to go with Dumbledore, James fucking joined them. He didn't want to let his son be alone with that man. But when they were at the cave and the first inferi showed up, James couldn't move. Couldn't breathe. Couldn't think.

Harry didn't understand why his father stopped fighting and why he just stared at the inferi with horror in his eyes. But when Harry raised his wand, ready to curse, James grabbed his wrist.

James leaned closer, recognised the ring on the inferi's finger and looked at it through blurry eyes before he let out a quiet sob.
