so in case you’re about to watch a cw television show based in the southwest that’s featuring an episode based on some supposed reservation – or you’ve read anything about the situation on the navajo nation recently – i wanted to share some ways that we all can help the diné (navajo) community beyond kind-of depicting them on television. 

today the navajo nation surpassed new york state and new jersey for the highest per-capita coronavirus infection rate in the country. that’s 2,304 cases per 100,000 people. 173,600 people live on the navajo nation, roughly. below are a number of organizations & community groups raising money & resources. it would mean so much to me if you’d consider supporting these communities right now - & continue to think about how you can support the indigenous communities near you, & understand the indigenous land you might currently occupy. 

the navajo water project helps bring running water to navajo families without, and also helps families pay their water & electricity bills 

the adopt an elder project helps feed navajo elders during the pandemic

the navajo health command operations center is the navajo nation’s only official fundraising and donation effort

rez rising is a database of native american small businesses across the southwest

the kinlani mutual aid group is a flagstaff, az based volunteer group collecting supplies

the native american relief fund operated by the native american community foundation provides emergency grants to communities for supplies & more

and a number of community-run fundraising efforts:

navajo & hopi families relief fund

native student emergency fund

bluff area mutual aid - supply delivery in utah

navajo nation relief project

if you’re aware of any other legitimate fundraising efforts to help these communities, or the indigenous communities near you, please add them.

IF YOU’RE SHORT ON CASH, HERE’S ANOTHER WAY TO DONATE TO BLM WHILE BROWSING THE INTERNET:

There’s an extension called Tab for a Cause that donates money to charity every time you open a new tab (on Chrome or Firefox).

Basically, it puts two or three small ads on your new tab page and then donates the ad revenue to charity.

You’ll get Hearts every time you open up a page, which act as “votes” that you can donate to various charities to tell Tab for a Cause where you want your money to go.

There are a few charities that are always available for donations, but Tab for a Cause also “spotlights” a new charity every month – and starting today (June 2), in support of the BLM movement, the spotlighted charity is the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

Also, did I mention it’s incredibly gorgeous and functional, too? You can customize your new tab background, take notes, create to-do lists and more (I’ve been using this extension for several years and I still have yet to get sick of it)!!

For those concerned about possible scams, this extension is super transparent. All of its code is open-source (x) (x) (x), and you can see all its quarterly financial reports right here.

Seriously, this is so so so easy – I usually hate posts that are all “there’s no reason not to do this!” but right now, I genuinely cannot think of even a single reason not to do this.

You’re sharp edges and razor-smiles and jacket patches and stereos. You don’t care about the damage you cause because you refuse to believe that you’re destroying yourself. You don’t care as long as you make sure that you’re in some way making sure that someone else gets something better out of it. You hate the government and you hate everything you’ve ever been told in school, and you like the graffiti in bathrooms but you’re too afraid to add any yourself. You think there’s nothing about you that’s memorable and that’s not true, but you have an odd, fluctuating relationship with how you view yourself. Sometimes you completely devolve into reading 100,000 words in a nighit and destroying your sleep schedule because you think the bags under your eyes are cool and there’s nothing about you that you think people will notice. You don’t like talking to the cashier at the grocery store and you think McDonald’s fries are way better than Burger King’s. You have an odd relationship with everything you read because you don’t want to do two hours of research but you don’t like to take things for surface value. You’re watching the world crumble and you have no one to hold and it hurts so much that you want to burn it all down yourself. You watch too many nature documentaries and like vampires more than werewolves but hate bringing up how much you know about lore. You read the Percy Jackson series when you were a pre-teen and now it comes up every so often like a ghost from the past. You never watch new shows and you hate using other streaming services because you’re so used to Netflix’s layout. The fridge is always half empty and you’re numb to your parents arguing. You’re numb to the world in the same way an Instagram photo has heart filters. I mean…ouch. But they’re not wrong
