This was of course my first handheld console EVER!
Those long nights of playing Tetris for endless hours, playing Mario for the first time too. I can’t actually remember if my mum or dad bought me this.
Regardless, I can say I had an exquisite childhood.

Oblique Strategies is a deck of cards designed to help artists break up an art block. Each of the 100+ cards contain a possible action to take or a new way of thinking about a creative problem. They were created by artists Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt in the 70s and have been updated with various new editions over the years.
This is a port of that deck of cards for Game Boy, for some reason.
It was made by me, Nicky Flowers, as a way to learn how GB Studio works. Turns out it works pretty well! I boot up the ROM on my DMG when I get stuck working on music or coding or really anything where I'm creating stuff. I hope you might find it useful too!
i’m afraid of the sun, developed for GameBoy by Ribbon Black in 1990.
A psychologically themed text adventure about a girl trying to connect with people while dealing with social anxiety. Not a spinoff of Super Mario Bros. 3 like I originally thought.

RetroAchievements adds Xbox 360-style achievement hunting and leaderboards to thousands of classic games and romhacks. Uncommon games often have romhacks that work with RetroAchievements. Check Romhacking.net for patches you can apply with utilities like Floating IPS. I’ve already recommended Rockman 4 Minus Infinity but it also has RetroAchievements.
Dynamite Headdy delocalization by M.I.J.E.T. (RetroAchievements) The localization we got here removed most of the dialogue, added American pop culture references, and made the annoying tower boss fight four times as long. This fan translation doesn’t do any of that. Go collect those secret bonus points.
Pulseman translation by M.I.J.E.T. (RetroAchievements) My favorite game on Sega Channel had you build up static electricity and then discharge it to attack and move around. Most of the team that made it went on to make Pokémon Red and Blue.
Super Mario Land DX by toruzz (RetroAchievements) Also Super Mario Land 2 DX by toruzz (RetroAchievements) Super Mario Land is the first game I ever beat and a fine place to get started with romhacks. This turns Super Mario Land and its sequel into Game Boy Color games with some graphics redrawn for better visibility. The RetroAchievements add some nice challenges to keep things fresh.
Extra Mario Bros. by ATA (RetroAchievements) This romhack gives Mario a dose of Metroid-like exploration with collecting keys and permanent upgrades to reach new places. It’s still Super Mario Bros., so the screen only scrolls to the right.
Umihara Kawase translation by satsu (RetroAchievements) A new Umihara Kawase game just came out and I’m afraid to start it because I get hooked on these games for a long time. We’ve got a wedding to plan! The original game’s RetroAchievements keep track of every door and backpack you’ve reached, so try to get them all.

Retro Game Mechanics Explained is an educational video series from Super Mario World speedrunner Dotsarecool. In Super Mario Land 2, it’s possible to glitch yourself right out of the map and into other regions of the Game Boy’s address space. Wandering around those garbage tiles and randomly flipping bits will usually crash the game, but it’s possible to trigger the ending credits from there. This reminds me of the game-breaking screen warp glitch I played around with in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening v1.0.

The humble Nintendo Game Boy had a low price and long battery life thanks to its cheap low-powered parts. JackTech is breaking down the Game Boy into pieces to show us exactly what each component can do. The Z80’s bare-bones instruction set made it a pain to code even basic tasks in assembly. That’s why I did all my old TI-83 games in BASIC.

I just got on the train headed for another PAX East! 70,000 gamers get together in Boston every year to play games, and you can find competition in any game there is. Last year, I took second place in the tournaments for Tetris DS and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, and I’ve been training to win them both this time around. I’ll be updating Twitter just like last year.
Anyway, enjoy some high-energy Game Boy chiptunes courtesy of Xinon. This album has gotten me through some long, tiring weekends.

You know, I really should post music here more often. I’ve got a ton that I want to put up, and I’m starting with the motorcycle puzzle platformer Motocross Maniacs. Before developers got a handle on the Game Boy’s sound hardware, they had to dedicate two of the Game Boy’s sound channels to music and the other two to sound effects. Konami’s talented composers made the best of it. I used the same restriction when I made the music and sound effects for Skeleton Hunter.

From my pile of forgotten Game Boy carts comes QBillion. You have a top-down view of stacks of boxes. The goal is to reduce these boxes to a single flat layer. Once you wrap your head around that, it’s intuitive, but the puzzles get downright fiendish. 15 years later, the developer is gone, the copyright has lapsed, and a young developer has made a free HTML5 remake.
Yup, this is the HD version. Everything is about double the resolution of the Game Boy game. Click here to play.

Tower of Heaven is a Game Boy-styled platform game with a great soundtrack that keeps adding conditions for failure. The controls are simple, but it's easy to get near the end of a section and accidentally break one of the game's many rules. Take ten minutes and try this out. Since then, they've made another game, Pause Ahead, which I want to run blind on my stream soon.
Speedrun times are almost a minute faster than this. This is a fun game to run, and I'd totally race this on SpeedRunsLive. There's only one real skip, and everything else is just platforming skill.

So this is another thing I was working with... I started this to understand how to work on my original mockup, I never worked with tiles and preset palettes and sizes before, so it was quite a challenge. I made a full set of tiles, that are way too boring to show here... but I made all the fruits, all the flowers and their wilted variation, weeds, rafflesias, some normal trees, pines, palms, grass, rock, etc... it was a lot of work... maybe someday I'll work on more full screen compositions, to show all the tiles... but for now, I can show vesta and kabuki, because they're not that boring... idk if I'll keep on doing this though...
