Y'know when Ody was like "I need to be a monster to get home, rarwrr"
Yeah, he didn't actually give up Polites' "Open arms" thing until "Six Hundred Strike"
In "Get In The Water" Ody doesn't jump straight to planning, scheeming, attacknng, or anything really. He actually tries to reason with him, to use compassion and sympathy. He tries to relate to Poseidon and apologizes, encouragung him to forgive.
Then when he's in the ocean, sinking, Poli, Eury, and Anticlea sing to him. But their words are different from the usual.
Eurylochus, is encouraging him, rather than criticizing him.
Anticlea is telling him that she loves him, instead of making it seem like he let her down.
But Polites' what he said. That is what gave Odysseus the ability to go Ruthless on Poseidon. Instead of what he's always been saying, which is "This life is amazing, when you greet it with open arms." He now says, "You can relax my friends, I can tell you're getting nervous"
This is him telling Odysseus, "I know what you've been through... Do what you must to see them."
This 'acceptance' is what allows Odysseus to abandon any form of compassion and mercy and why he's able to be as ruthless as he is.
That's also why he was quick to kill Eurymachus, he mentioned open arms, Odysseys didn't need that philosophy anymore, dead.
Also, y'know when he says "My mercy has long since drowned" ?
yeah thats bs. It only drowned like, 4 hours ago, when he was sinking in the ocean. Because yes, the spirits whre pushing him up. But Polites took his philosophy down with him.
so uh yeah.
Sad Ithica Thoughts
I love Epic: The Musical and was sad to see it end. And I couldn't help, but concoct and hear these lyrics whenever the little reprise tune of 'I'm Just a Man' plays during 'Would You Fall In Love With Me Again?' when Penelope and Odysseus finally embrace 🎶 I’m just a man Who finally made it home
After all the years away from what I’ve known

When “The Challenge” finally drops methinks it’ll have a chokehold on me for 100 years
I desperately need a rendition of “Survive” in Ithaka Saga’s song “King”. Let me hear Odysseus unleash his remaining rage and fury on the Suitors, the only things standing in between him and the end of his journey home.
Just finished the Ithaca Saga. Time to go to fanfics, fanart and ai bots to cope.
ok so i just freaked out a little bit!!!!!
im sure someone pointed this out already but in “would you fall in love with me again”, Odysseus details his wrongdoings from his journey home, but in the instrumentals, you can hear little callbacks to precious sagas!
when Odysseus says “left a trail of red on every island”, you can hear trumpets to the melody of ruthlessness
when he says, “as i traded friends like objects I could use”, you can hear a bit of circe’s motif i think!!!
and when he says, “hurt more lives than i can count on my hands” , you can hear some of mutiny!!!
just thought it was super cool, especially since it’s the last song of the last saga

Can we please appreciate Odysseus being a silent stalker in the shadows, taking out suitors with his bow, not deigning to speak to them as he takes them out one by one
until some of them go "we have to strike him in the darkness too! we know the halls of this palace! the odds can be tilted!"
and Odysseus, built this palace with his very hands, has to step out of the shadows like "are you this fucking stupid"
