Big brothers!!!
apparently joeys birthday happened at some point. happy pride month king
Based off the comments of my last puppyshipping post. Has anyone considered a world where Serenity and Mokuba start hanging out and that subsequently leads to Joey and Kaiba reluctantly having to spend time together and noticing how similar they and how caring they are towards their siblings and how Kaiba's eyes soften ever so softly whenever Mokuba speaks with him and how Joey somehow always smells like caramel and....
I'm not super into puppyshipping but for those who are, you think Seto and Joey ever bond over how shitty their dads are?
Like, just one day Joey mentions his dad's issues and Kaiba's just responds by mentioning something about Gozaburo in return. Or maybe it's vice versa and Joey doesn't pry since he's picked up most of the pieces after the whole Noah arc.
I like crime dramas, I like AUs, I like drawing action and I like loyal bodyguard characters so this really couldn't be helped 😔
Shout out to the fics that write this exact thing, you all sustain me more than you know
When fic authors describe Jonouchi Katsuya's hair as dyed.
I get it, okay?
I get that usually you can find a blond delinquent in Japanese media and assume that the hair dying is an artifact of that. But we see that he's been blond since he was a kid, he wasn't rebelliously dying his hair to look like a thug when he was eight.
AND it's thematic okay!
People can assume Jou has dyed his hair and that changes their perceptions of him--they say ah he must be a violent thug, he's performing the Violent Thug Indicators. But he's not, and if he had been dying his hair when he was in the gang I think he would have stopped sometime after becoming friends with Yugi, as a physical demonstration of how he's leaving his violent past behind him.
The blond hair is just another way to indicate what assumptions people make about him not knowing the truth behind them.
For example blond hair = thug but really he's just half American and the hair is natural.
In duelist kingdom he really wants the money and people assume it's because he's poor and wants to spend it on getting cool stuff, but actually it's because his sister needs a surgery.
People choose Jou to duel because they believe he's an idiot and they can manipulate and beat him easily, and he is dumb and easily manipulated but also constantly surpassing people's expectations.
THESE ARE ALL SO GORGEOUS OMG
I am IN LOVE with your artsyle, thank you so much for including my request!! <3 This is such a treat
Finished! Thanks to everyone who suggested a character <3

joey wheeler.? j..joey...??? joey time 😳......✊😻
I'll always maintain that this is the best duel in the series (manga or anime). Why? TLDR: narrative/trope subversion (and he is a MASSIVE bitch)
In a format where conclusions tend to be forgone it managed actual suspense. Practically no one, in-universe or out, expected Joey/Jou to win. Sure, his True Friends TM are rooting for him, but this is clearly a mismatch. Marik(extra spicy edition) is at this point undefeated and Joey won his last two tournament duels on technicalities, punching above his weight class via sheer grit.
As the audience, we KNOW he can't win. Joey is the Lancer; narratively it would make no sense for him to beat what is clearly a final arc boss. The Lancer is here to put up enough of a fight to make the Hero, Yugi, look extra cool when he beats Marik later.
We all know it's just supposed to be Joey putting up a good fight, but damn, what a fight! Stakes much more visceral than usual, turnabout after turnabout as the tides shift and we wonder if this is the one that ends the duel. All the while we get to see the snark on full and glorious display against an opponent outraged to even have to dirty his hands against someone other than the protagonist.
The big, properly climactic finishing shot…and then the reveal that Joey’s still standing. He’s won. Against all odds, and with strategy instead of luck. Everyone can see it. Even the thus-far unflappable Marik is reeling, because that was not supposed to happen. This narratively-doomed punching bag that spent the whole duel irreverently heckling was not supposed to be able to back it up.
And THEN Joey falls. He gets to have his victory and fill his role in the plot, all without undermining Marik’s threat. If anything, it makes the Bad Guy even more despicable and intimidating, since he’s clearly willing to cheat with magic murder powers if the cards don’t fall his way. Joey has all the best personal motivation, and free rein to be much more of a bitch than either protagonist (stoic and sweetheart as they are). We want him to win, we know that’s not what’s best for the story, and we get to have our cake and eat it too. With a LARGE side of ham
big fan of how much of a bitch he is
It's not his fault they're all weird
og post
Was reading a fic where these two were playing chess and, honest to god, I thought this was going to be the outcome
