Happy Wet Beast Wednesday! (I had this Idea inspired by @georgiedoesntfloat ) I wanted to introduce my Nøkken OC, Kori. Thanks to my Friend for helping me research more traditionally. I love this character.
He's new so he doesn't have any lore story into him yet. But, I'm still working on him. But there are facts about him
He got some scars from Human Hunters who wanted his head.
He loves Grilled Cheese.
He's a very silly boi.
Nøkken Among the Lilies
Thought I'd post a pic of my summer acrylic painting.
The Nøkken (also known as Näcken, Nøkk, Nixie, or Nix) is a water spirit from Scandinavian Folklore. He is known to reside in still bodies of water, hiding in the lily pads and fern. Nøkken was said to play the violin, fiddle, or harp so beautifully it lured people to the bodies of water where they drowned.
In May I worked on touching up my acrylic paintings. Here's my first attempt at the Nøkken sitting in a still body of water playing his fiddle.

And here's the finished product. (Although I might always add touch ups because my work is never finished).

I based Åse’s appearance of of Nøkken from Scandinavian folklore. I compare Åse lot with folk myths and creatures, most specifically with changelings. But Nøkken is also a good comparison. With it being associated with water and shape shifting.
I also like the symbolism of Åse kind of embracing the dark and the water. He isn't a naturally mean or bad person I think but he has been treated like an outsider most of his life, which was very dehumanizing for him. After he ran away from home and lost all the people in his life that actually treated him with love and respect he just gave up and accepted his own inhumanity. Being in the water kind of symbolizes him reclaiming the darkness and surrounding herself with it.
The composition itself is based on this Theodor Kittelsen illustration. This was especially fun for me because I was personally horrified of Nøkken when i was little. It didn't help that I grew up near a lake. The Kittelsen painting being a big reason why it freaked me out so much.
