I am currently working on making a Modrotlac print, which is a traditional Slovakian way of resist dyeing with indigo. I have been trying to recreate this way of printing for a garment that I intend to make as part of my ‘Then and Now’ project. However, this process has been a lot of trial and error so far and it hasn’t gone as planned. I made a paste out of rice flour, plain flour, water and glycerine to act as the resist for the dye. I printed by patterns from stencils that I cut our from acetate and watercolour paper (acetate worked better). Then once the patterns had dried, I dipped the fabric into some navy blue dye. However, the flour mixture came right off. I have already tried to recreate the Modrotlac prints by using hot wax but this didn’t work either. I am going to try a new recipe for the paste which I am hoping will work, if not, then I will have to try hot wax again but in a different way.

Some prints of plants that I have been working on in the textiles workshop. This explores negative space, the space inside and outside of plants. Some are studies painted directly onto the fabric with ink and some are printed in coloured ink.

Ezt tegnap rajzoltam, de ez egyelőre még csak egy próbarajz egy készülő könyvhöz. Misztótfalusi éppen a szakácskönyvét nyomtatja. Már biztos fáradt volt, hogy az első oldalon fejjel lefelé szedte a címet.

This is a draft for an upcoming book. Tótfalusi, the famous Hungarian printer is printing his cook-book. Poor Tótfalusi must be very tired, he has set the first page upside down.

A szemüveges szirén

Tavasszal Dunajcsik Mátyás – A szemüveges szirén c. csodás meseregényének illusztrációin dolgoztam, ami a Kolibri Kiadónál jelenik meg hamarosan (a Könyvhéten már egész biztosan megtaláljátok). A hosszú munkának másfél hete lett vége, amikor a gyomai Kner Nyomdában kinyomtatták a könyvet. Pénteken pedig már meg is érkezett a Kolibri Kiadóba, az utolsó képen láthatjátok is a boldog szerzőt a könyvvel. Ez volt az első mese amit valaha illusztráltam, összesen 12 teljes oldalas és rengeteg apró rajz, valamint borító és egy térkép is készült hozzá és most nagyon boldog vagyok, hogy elkészült!

Children’s book illustrations

This spring I worked on the illustrations of a beautiful children’s story, written by Mátyás Dunajcsik a Hungarian writer, who is currently living on Iceland. This was my first children’s book illustration project, and it will be published by Kolibri Kiadó this week. The press printed some days ago and on Friday it has arrived to the publisher’s office. Dunajcsik was there as well, and you can see him in the last photo with the fresh book. I am so happy now!
