*this is especially important: these days on Tumblr there’s a wonderful atmosphere of being able to talk openly about your mental illness or your struggle. And that’s great! But there’s a difference between sharing in order to help yourself and other people and sharing just because you have no other coping mechanisms. As much as you’re able, try to work on developing a different outlet. People aren’t qualified to be your therapist because they’re nice to you a couple of times. Please remember that they have lives too, and their job is not to make you feel better or pity you, no matter how difficult your life is.
And last but not least:
But…
Your interests are your own. I can’t advise anyone to change their interests to fit in with a certain group of people - that’s stupid, and actually quite damaging to your sense of self.
Instead, I would recommend that, maybe if you feel like your topics of conversation are falling flat with this group of people, you move on to other, greener pastures. There are bound to be places where your ideas mesh better with an audience.
Sometimes, what might seem like a harmless comment to you might be a very discomforting thought to another person. I recently had a conversation on a forum with a guy who was telling me that his headcanon was that Pearl (from SU) would soon get a male love interest who loved mechanics and weapons next, and that would be her best arc, because she would finally get a ‘healthy’ love interest.
His intentions were good, but he was entirely unaware of how cringey this kind of thing was to a bunch of (probably queer) people, who have spent their entire lives being told that the only ‘good’ character development for them would be to get a ‘male love interest’. No one wanted to be the jerk to say “fuck off, we don’t want that to happen” but everyone was answering him in a flat way, trying to discourage the discussion further. Instead of picking up on the hint, he bulldozed on, thinking he was having a ‘lively conversation’ which was, in fact, in its late stages of death.
I know I’ll probably get a few messages to this saying: What about people on the Autistic Spectrum? Sometimes, people can’t pick up social cues or ‘hints’. And if that’s the case, it’s incredibly difficult to understand why you’re not having any luck communicating despite your best efforts.
I feel that on a person level, please believe me. I made this infograph for THAT VERY REASON. Because I WAS that awkward kid who didn’t pick up on hints well. In fact, I still have trouble talking to people. If any of you have had the misfortune of being my conversational partner, you’ll know that I tend to be overly blunt and come off as very unfriendly. It’s something that I, myself, am working on currently in order to grow into a better person. It’s a struggle in progress, but I am aiming towards the progress side, and I just wanted to help out others while I was at it.
Believe in you're dreams...Vogue❤️

Are you active on social media? Want to go behind-the-scenes at NASA and meet our scientists, engineers, astronauts and managers? Want to see and feel a rocket launch in-person? Then you would love our NASA Social events!
A NASA Social is a program that provides opportunities for our social media followers (like you!) to learn and share information about our missions, people and programs. Formerly known as NASA Tweetups, these socials include both special in-person events and social media credentials for people who share the news in a significant way. To date, this program has brought thousands of people together for unique social media experiences of exploration and discovery.
NASA Socials range from two hours to two days in length and include a “meet and greet” session to allow participants to mingle with fellow socialites and the people behind our social media accounts. The participants are selected from those who register their interest for the event on the web.
Do you need to have a social media account to register for a NASA Social?
Yes. The socials are designed for social media users who follow @NASA on a variety of platforms. The goal of NASA Socials is to allow people who regularly interact with each other via these platforms to meet in person and discuss one of their favorite subjects: NASA!
What types of events have we hosted in the past? Take a look:
Participants for a NASA Social surrounding the launch of a SpaceX cargo vehicle to the International Space Station met with former Deputy Administrator Lori Garver underneath the engines of the Saturn V rocket.
A participant at a NASA Social in Washington tweets as he listens to astronaut Joe Acaba answer questions about his time living aboard the International Space Station.
Juno launch Tweetup participants pose for a group photo with NASA Administrator Charles Bolden with the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) in the background at Kennedy Space Center.
And of course, some of our NASA Socials culminate with a rocket launch! You can experience one in-person. Apply to attend a once in a lifetime experience.

Hey, man:
They tried to say that abolishing chattel slavery would ruin the economy.
They tried to say that outlawing child labor would ruin the economy.
They tried to say that the 8-hour day would ruin the economy
They tried to say that a minimum wage would ruin the economy
They tried to say that health and safety regulations would ruin the economy
Have we noticed a pattern yet?

I often don't post code stuff on here but I guess I should more often since I do that too. I made a Bluesky Bookmarklet for anyone that still uses bookmarklets (I do). It doesn't do anything complex, just grabs the current URL you're looking at and tosses it in a Bluesky action intent so I'm not grabbing any data or anything like that. It's just a simple share button. 😊 Just to to this Codepen link to get it.
Today is the last day of the original “Libby app” free book club reading of “After The Flood” by Kassandra Montag ends. Along with the freedom, increased access, and connection this personal book club brought there are also many advantages provided by libraries who have set up electronic lending of books.
First, the access greatly increases. There is approximately one library for every 173,224 people in Japan, 15,932 people in the UK, 12,011 people in Switzerland, 58,178 people in Canada, 6,875 people in Norway, 2,799 people in the United States, for every approximate 600,000 people in China, 29,500 people in the Netherlands and 15,100 people in Australia. Some of the discrepancies can be understood as some countries have institutions similar but not considered traditional public libraries. For other countries, (UK and Japan) people are close enough to each other where for the most part a smaller number of libraries doesn’t necessarily mean less access as it does for other countries (China, the US). Countries with public libraries that aren’t able to be as spread out may increase the access to residents through downloading and while a good portion of these areas may also have issues with internet access mobile libraries or programs that can take back the books once the due date occurs will give residents opportunities they otherwise didn’t have.
Second, it should not come as a shock to many that have been in school that the books students are required to have for school are massive, cumbersome and have been somewhat linked to posture and other spine difficulties. Electronic books, even strictly for entertainment or so you can take many when going on a trip because traditional books would add too much weight to your luggage allow you more freedom and access by taking away both a physical and space-related con.
Finally, a great instance with electronic books (depending on the library), is that it’s right there! You don’t have to wait to get home, get in the car or the bus, get your card, travel to the library or have to wait a few days to get the book. You can get it right when you’re in the mood to read it (I believe, that is how it should be set up—I go traditional)
i know you're super busy all the time but just in case - any tips for law firm networking events? or, alternatively, as i have both this week, on how to sell yourself at an interview? you seem to be a person who knows how to play the game. anyway! loads of luck with all your things!
Networking events are a) the worst, b) incredibly valuable in expanding your circle of personal and professional contacts. Most of my tips are spawned from me viciously hating them, and simultaneously knowing they are Important For Career Development.
First of all, if you’re waiting for the magic rom-com moment when you totally connect with someone and they hire you on the spot—it’s not going to happen. (I definitely had to kill that fantasy, several times.)
Instead, it’s best to think of networking as a meet cute—the goal is to make an impression, and for that person to know who you are when you follow up with them afterwards.
….and you are going to follow up afterwards.
Start with people you know. There are a lot of networking events I’ve attended where there are classmates/professors in attendance. It is perfectly good manners to approach someone you know, greet them, and then introduce yourself to whoever they’re talking to.
I mean, obviously you can’t be an asshole about it, you don’t want to interrupt them, but I’ve definitely pulled this move with great success.
“Hey, [FRIEND] I saw you and I just had to say hello. Oh, I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be rude, I’m [NAME], I’m in [FRIEND]’s Corporate Law class.”
It also works really nicely if you can slip a compliment in for friend, both because it’s classy and they feel obligated to reciprocate.
Go in with 2-3 general questions that require more than a brief answer. Some of my favorites are “What’s the most interesting or challenging project/issue you’ve worked on in the last 6 months?” “What brought you to [area of specialization]?”
These are good because they don’t require you knowing anything about the person, but can get them to open up about their work. I haven’t met a lawyer who doesn’t enjoy sharing their war stories.
Work the room. If you’re talking to a single person for more than 15 minutes, you’re probably spending too much time with them.
It is totally appropriate to ask for a business card! Ask for a business card! This helps for the next step which is…
Follow up within the next business week. As I said before, networking events are meet cutes. If you really want to develop this individual as a contact, you’re going to have to keep reaching out to them.
I’ve had the most success in finding and friending them on LinkedIn directly afterwards. (Literally, I go home and spend an hour finding everyone I talked to.) In my connection request, I thank them for the conversation and mention one specific thing they talked about.
Then, about a week later, I email them directly and ask to grab coffee/have an informational interview.
Attach your resume to the request, and send them a reminder email 24 hours before with your resume attached.
Keep up contact. These types of relationships aren’t a one-shot deal, you need to stay at the forefront of the minds. Like the articles they post on LinkedIn. Reach out and congratulate them on new jobs/awards.
Almost all attorneys publish pretty frequently through their firm website/blog. If they post something related to your interests, I suggest reaching out and saying so—a couple sentences wishing them well ought to do the trick.
If you’re reading through this and it sounds incredibly daunting, it is. But it is also one of those things that gets easier with practice. Be polite, relaxed, and professional, and chances are you’re already leagues ahead in the game.
my favourite thing about history (and the reason why social history matters to me above anything else) is the reminder that there's no emotion i've felt, no grief or trauma, no joy or laughter, that hasn't been experienced by other people across time and space, and the idea of slipping into another life so different on the surface and yet so fundamentally similar to my own, and understanding them as a life like my own, with inner worlds that can't be easily articulated, with loved ones and favourite foods and days they woke up having slept wrong and the acute experiences of standing in a quiet room and watching the light catch on dust floating in the air, of the smell outside after it rains heavily, of mornings after having dreamt something feverish and strange, or the knowledge of an impending loss and trying to prepare for it emotionally. peeling fruit and giving a piece to a friend. being awake at an hour that feels like you're the only person alive in the world. that feeling when you know you need to eat and that you're hungry but you just don't find it appealing at all and it kind of makes you feel nauseous. i like imagining people in all different places and times experiencing those things, it makes me feel less alone and afraid of myself and my experience feels less daunting if that makes sense. others have lived with experiences like this too, and do, and will.
It seems that with growing older comes the growth of conversation. It evolves from when you were three and the main topics were things you like to eat and games you play to weather and politics. It's these jumps from one solid area of small talk to another that made me realize I must be in between phases. Let me explain.
In high school I found myself being constantly asked what college I was planning to go to and what I would major in. Then once in college it became the constant question of "how are you liking it?" and what I planned to do with my life. Now having graduated years ago and moved into full "adulthood", the topics of small talk party conversation have gotten closer to being that of politics, religion, etc... but not quite yet.
I still find a main line of questioning starting out with what job I currently have. This of course doesn't stay very interesting because there's only so many ways to explain how you end up getting paid every two weeks. It's at this point that the conversation seems to make a jump backwards. Unless you're a doctor, lawyer, then the next question asked is "what did you go to school for?". It's as if I'm an adult but not quite at that point where people aren't confused about how I got from school to work.
The main reason for this popping up in my head is because tomorrow night I will be taking part in a chili cookoff, in which there will most likely be as much small talk as there will be different kinds of chili.
